On September 11-13, the international symposium “After Latin America's Human Rights Era: Back to Square One, Reconstruction, or Reinvention?” took place at the Université de Montréal.
The international colloquium was inaugurated by Luis Van Isschot (University of Toronto), who presented a lecture entitled “Human Rights Counterpoint: National Liberation, Anti-Imperialism, and Radical Justice-Making in Latin America”.
On the final day, September 3, Delphine Lacombe (CNRS) presented a lecture entitled “Struggles Against Patriarchal Violence and Human Rights: genesis and perspectives”.
In addition, four ERIGAL members presented the results of their work: Garance Robert (UdeM), on “The Human Rights Defense in Hostile Context: Nicaragua & Guatemala“; Marc-André Anzueto (UQO), on ‘Mapping Canadian security Aid with Transnational Human Rights NGOs in Colombia (2003-2023)’; Danielle Coenga (UdeM), on ‘Anti-feminist/Anti-gender Politics Against Human Rights in Brazil’; and Rose Chabot (McGill), on ‘Redefining Rights from the ’Purple Zone': Violence against Women and Feminismo Popular in Argentina”.
ERIGAL professors Levy Charmain and Tina Hilgers moderated the “Feminism & intersectionality” and “Backlash and conservatism” panels, respectively.
The international colloquium was an excellent opportunity to reflect on the different realities and challenges of Human Rights in Latin America.
